David Martin - Cameron High School

David Martin - Cameron High School

District 1 WISTCA Rep

Growing up in Milwaukee, I attended St. Sebastian Parochial School until seventh grade.  Then my parents moved our family (7 siblings) north to Ladysmith, where I graduated high school.

After working for the Reinhart Company for several years, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in education and began my second career at Cameron High School. I teach high school language arts and communication electives. I am also the head track and field coach, m.s. football coach, and m.s. basketball coach.

Our early years at Cameron Track and Field were pretty tough as we didn’t have a track and just worked out on a grass practice field. In addition, for many years, we were one of the smallest D-2 schools to compete against many of the larger teams in the Division 2 tournaments.

In 2016, our school district built a new nine-lane track along with field event facilities. Since then, we have hosted both D-2 and D-3 regionals and sectionals, along with various East Lakeland and Heart O North Conference Meets.

When I took over the track and field program 21 years ago, we only had about 20 kids out and didn’t have a middle school program. Today at Cameron, we enjoy having about 100 kids out for m.s. and h.s. track and field.  Members of the district have also started a Blue Hills Track and Field Club that is open to all area Barron County athletes. The club meets in Cameron during the summer months where the kids work out and compete.

My wife and I make Spooner our home, where we have raised two daughters and now have two grandchildren.
